Il n&#8217;eut jamais \u00e0 Paris d&#8217;exposition d&#8217;ensemble dans une grande galerie, ce point de d\u00e9part de toute r\u00e9putation nationale. Il v\u00e9cut dans la pudeur, dans ce refus instinctif de la r\u00e9clame qui fut \u00e0 la fois sa force et la limite de sa notori\u00e9t\u00e9. C&#8217;est l\u00e0 que ses deux ma\u00eetres, Alfred Roll et Puvis de Chavannes, exposaient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">En <strong>1892<\/strong>, Roll lui annonce le 31 mars l&#8217;acceptation de ses quatre paysages de Togny : <em>Laveuses au Ruisseau<\/em>, <em>Sous-bois l&#8217;Hiver<\/em>, <em>Coin de Jardin \u2014 Effet de Neige<\/em> et <em>Souvenir \u2014 Int\u00e9rieur de Cour<\/em>. C&#8217;est sa premi\u00e8re grande exposition parisienne. Il a vingt-trois ans, il tremble encore d&#8217;\u00e9motion. <em>Sous-bois l&#8217;Hiver<\/em> est reproduit dans le catalogue du Salon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">L&#8217;ann\u00e9e suivante, en <strong>1893<\/strong>, il est nomm\u00e9 <strong>Associ\u00e9<\/strong> de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nationale \u2014 distinction accord\u00e9e par ses pairs, qui marque une reconnaissance officielle et durable. Il expose <em>Vieil Int\u00e9rieur de Cour \u00e0 Erquy<\/em>, reproduit dans le catalogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Il pr\u00e9sentera des \u0153uvres au Salon de la Nationale <strong>presque chaque ann\u00e9e jusqu&#8217;en 1939<\/strong> \u2014 soit pr\u00e8s d&#8217;un demi-si\u00e8cle de fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 \u00e0 cette institution. Parmi les toiles les plus remarqu\u00e9es : <em>Vall\u00e9e de Saint-Pierre-Aigle<\/em> (1897), <em>La Guenelle et le Pr\u00e9<\/em> (1898), <em>Bords de la Marne, le Matin, en Octobre<\/em> (1907), et ses s\u00e9ries de la Vesle en hiver dans les ann\u00e9es 1909\u20131914. La critique r\u00e9moise, encore r\u00e9serv\u00e9e face \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re impressionniste, commence cependant \u00e0 s&#8217;y int\u00e9resser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">En <strong>septembre 1896<\/strong>, quatre de ses toiles figurent \u00e0 l&#8217;<strong>Exposition R\u00e9gionale des Beaux-Arts de Ch\u00e2lons<\/strong> : <em>Vieux Pommier<\/em>, <em>Soir en Champagne<\/em>, <em>Lever de Lune en Plaine de Champagne<\/em>, <em>Matin\u00e9e d&#8217;Hiver<\/em>. Il y pr\u00e9sente <strong>quatorze toiles<\/strong> \u2014 sa premi\u00e8re grande exposition \u00e0 Reims \u2014 couvrant toutes ses ann\u00e9es pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes : Bretagne, Champagne, Lorraine, Saint-Pierre-Aigle. On peut y voir notamment <em>Vall\u00e9e de Saint-Pierre-Aigle<\/em>, <em>Moulin \u00e0 Vent de Saint-Briac<\/em>, <em>Pleine Mer \u00e0 Saint-Briac<\/em> ou encore <em>Coucher de Soleil en Champagne<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">La r\u00e9ception est mitig\u00e9e dans la presse locale, peu accoutum\u00e9e \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re divis\u00e9e de sa palette. <em>L&#8217;Ind\u00e9pendant R\u00e9mois<\/em> juge qu&#8217;il <em>&#8220;pousse trop loin l&#8217;amour de la lumi\u00e8re&#8221;<\/em>.
