Arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris en 1888 pour poursuivre sa formation, il suit les cours de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie Julian, fr\u00e9quente l\u2019\u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts comme \u00e9l\u00e8ve libre et travaille d\u2019apr\u00e8s l\u2019antique ainsi qu\u2019au Louvre, selon la discipline traditionnelle de l\u2019enseignement artistique.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1660\">Durant ces ann\u00e9es, il \u00e9volue dans un milieu artistique tr\u00e8s actif. Il participe aux travaux de la <strong data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1257\">Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de la Palette<\/strong>, o\u00f9 il re\u00e7oit l\u2019enseignement d\u2019<strong data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1304\">Alfred Roll<\/strong>, et fr\u00e9quente un temps l\u2019atelier de <strong data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1363\">Puvis de Chavannes<\/strong>, dont l\u2019influence, tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9sente dans le climat artistique de l\u2019\u00e9poque, marque toute une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de jeunes peintres. Cette formation lui donne une solide ma\u00eetrise du dessin et de la composition, qui restera perceptible dans toute son \u0153uvre, m\u00eame lorsqu\u2019il se d\u00e9tournera des sujets acad\u00e9miques.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"2290\">Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 cet enseignement officiel, Bocquet travaille dans un atelier commun avec le peintre r\u00e9mois <strong data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"1791\">\u00c9mile-Auguste W\u00e9ry<\/strong>, dont la personnalit\u00e9 joue un r\u00f4le important dans ses d\u00e9buts. Il fr\u00e9quente \u00e9galement des cercles artistiques et litt\u00e9raires o\u00f9 se rencontrent peintres, illustrateurs et \u00e9crivains, notamment lors des r\u00e9unions des <strong data-start=\"2004\" data-end=\"2028\">Samedis de l\u2019Imagier<\/strong>, rue de Rennes, chez les fr\u00e8res des Gachons. Il y c\u00f4toie des artistes tels que <strong data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2130\">Richard Cordingley<\/strong> ou <strong data-start=\"2134\" data-end=\"2157\">L\u00e9once de Jonci\u00e8res<\/strong>, dans un climat intellectuel marqu\u00e9 par la fin du symbolisme, la revue <em data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2239\">La Plume<\/em> et les recherches artistiques de la fin du si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2292\" data-end=\"2806\">Malgr\u00e9 cette immersion dans les milieux parisiens, Paul Bocquet s\u2019\u00e9loigne progressivement de la peinture d\u2019atelier et des sujets historiques pour se consacrer presque exclusivement au paysage. Tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t, il choisit de travailler sur le motif, pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant l\u2019observation directe de la nature aux constructions th\u00e9oriques. Cette orientation le rapproche de l\u2019esprit des peintres impressionnistes, dont l\u2019influence est souvent \u00e9voqu\u00e9e \u00e0 propos de sa couleur et de sa facture, sans qu\u2019il se rattache pourtant \u00e0 leur \u00e9cole.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2808\" data-end=\"3166\">Son \u0153uvre se d\u00e9veloppe ainsi en marge des grands mouvements, dans une position singuli\u00e8re. Form\u00e9 dans la tradition acad\u00e9mique, sensible aux recherches naturalistes et attentif aux le\u00e7ons de l\u2019impressionnisme, il \u00e9labore une peinture personnelle fond\u00e9e sur la fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 au paysage et sur la recherche d\u2019harmonies subtiles entre la terre, le ciel et la lumi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3551\">Cette ind\u00e9pendance explique le caract\u00e8re particulier de son \u0153uvre.<br data-start=\"3234\" data-end=\"3237\" \/>Alors que la peinture \u00e9volue rapidement au tournant du si\u00e8cle, Bocquet reste fid\u00e8le aux paysages qu\u2019il conna\u00eet depuis l\u2019enfance \u2014 la Champagne, le Soissonnais, la vall\u00e9e de la Vesle, Coeuvres ou Togny \u2014 revenant sans cesse aux m\u00eames motifs pour en approfondir la sensation plut\u00f4t que pour en renouveler le sujet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3553\" data-end=\"3640\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Chez lui, la modernit\u00e9 ne r\u00e9side pas dans la rupture, mais dans la constance du regard.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1192\"><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap has-text-align-justify has-extra-small-font-size\"><!-- \/wp:post-content --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"justify\",\"fontSize\":\"extra-small\"} --><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; Il refuse les proc\u00e9d\u00e9s syst\u00e9matiques et revendique une peinture n\u00e9e de l\u2019observation :<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1867\">\n<p data-start=\"1794\" data-end=\"1867\">\u00ab Je n\u2019ai aucun syst\u00e8me\u2026 l\u2019ex\u00e9cution \u00e9tant impr\u00e9vue comme la sensation. \u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1869\" data-end=\"2169\">Cette phrase r\u00e9sume bien sa d\u00e9marche.<br data-start=\"1906\" data-end=\"1909\" \/>Le tableau n\u2019est pas construit \u00e0 partir d\u2019une formule, mais \u00e0 partir d\u2019un contact direct avec la nature. Le peintre travaille le plus souvent en plein air, ou \u00e0 partir d\u2019\u00e9tudes faites sur le motif, cherchant moins \u00e0 d\u00e9crire qu\u2019\u00e0 retrouver une impression juste.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2299\">Cette attitude le rapproche de l\u2019esprit des impressionnistes, dont l\u2019influence est reconnue dans les t\u00e9moignages contemporains :<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2490\">\n<p data-start=\"2303\" data-end=\"2490\">\u00ab L\u2019influence qui pr\u00e9valut chez Paul Bocquet est celle des impressionnistes ; il leur doit en partie sa couleur, sa facture et surtout sa vision. \u00bb <span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2602\">Mais son \u0153uvre reste plus retenue, plus construite, et demeure attach\u00e9e \u00e0 la tradition du paysage naturaliste.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.23&#8243; Il recherche avant tout les tons clairs et purs pour donner sa pleine valeur \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re. Aucune couleur dont il n'ait, au sortir du tube, modifi\u00e9 l'intensit\u00e9 par un dosage subtil avec le blanc avant tout autre m\u00e9lange : des bleus violac\u00e9s, des jaunes clairs ou dor\u00e9s, quelques terres qu'il \u00e9liminera plus tard, parce que ce sont des tons lourds, et qu'il remplacera par des jaunes, des rouges et des bruns de mars, des verts tendres, bleut\u00e9s, jamais froids, \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de violets et de rouges. Elle est plus ou moins fragment\u00e9e, semble timide lorsqu'elle n'accuse aucun contour, ce qui donne de la douceur et de l'enveloppe.<br>D\u00e8s cette \u00e9poque, il se servait probablement de la brosse plate en soies blanches et longues de Lefranc et de quelques pinceaux de martre qu'on lui a toujours connu, et qu'il avait adopt\u00e9s comme convenant le mieux \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re de peindre. En fait, cette \"infernale facilit\u00e9 de la brosse\" d\u00e9nonc\u00e9e par Delacroix (Henri Perruchot) n'a jamais exist\u00e9 pour le peintre champenois. Le pinceau apporte d'autant moins par lui-m\u00eame que l'artiste \u00e9vite les gros emp\u00e2tements et les aplats, autant que les virgules ch\u00e8res \u00e0 certains impressionnistes et qu'un critique lui avait une fois reproch\u00e9es. Il se disait ind\u00e9pendant, se d\u00e9fendait d'\u00eatre inf\u00e9od\u00e9 \u00e0 un groupe. Un groupe est toujours fragile, \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re, souvent artificiel. Pourtant si l'artiste trouve son originalit\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9action et l'opposition \u00e0 son entourage, il subit son \u00e9poque, compose, sans le vouloir avec ses contemporains. avec une pr\u00e9dilection pour les paysages d'automne.<br>Peut-\u00eatre est-ce son temp\u00e9rament naturellement nostalgique qui est attir\u00e9 par cette m\u00e9lancolie qui n'est pas tristesse ?<br>Peut-\u00eatre ses yeux abim\u00e9s, puis la perte de l'un d'eux peuvent expliquer aussi son attirance vers les lumi\u00e8res les plus att\u00e9nu\u00e9es : automne, hiver ?<br>Aux contrastes \u00e0 la force apparente des tonalit\u00e9s des bords de la m\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, trop dure \u00e0 son opacit\u00e9 cristalline, il donnera des bleut\u00e9s sans heurts.<br>De la Champagne au Soissonnais, de Fontainebleau ou avant, de la Bretagne, il est coloriste des douceurs.<br>\"Les hivers malgr\u00e9 leur m\u00e9lancolie ont toujours de l'\u00e9clat\" dit-il.<br>Il est peintre de
