C\u2019est dans ce territoire, entre Reims, les plaines champenoises et les villages des environs, que se construit progressivement son regard de paysagiste. Bien avant que la Vesle ou la montagne de Reims ne deviennent ses motifs les plus connus, l\u2019artiste d\u00e9couvre dans ces paysages proches un terrain d\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation o\u00f9 se forme sa sensibilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"1095\">Un \u00e9pisode important de cette p\u00e9riode se d\u00e9roule en septembre 1889. Apr\u00e8s une rupture avec son grand ami \u00c9mile-Auguste W\u00e9ry et l\u2019\u00e9chec d\u2019un concours, Bocquet traverse un moment de doute et de remise en question. Sur les conseils de son ami Henri Charlot, il se rend \u00e0 <strong data-start=\"974\" data-end=\"993\">Orbais-l\u2019Abbaye<\/strong>, dans la Marne. Il choisit de peindre un chemin encaiss\u00e9 qui serpente dans le paysage, bord\u00e9 d\u2019un bosquet sombre et d\u2019un talus o\u00f9 se d\u00e9tache un arbre aux branches gr\u00eales sous un ciel clair l\u00e9g\u00e8rement ros\u00e9. Plus loin, une meule capte une lumi\u00e8re d\u00e9j\u00e0 vive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1971\">Cette toile de <strong data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1596\">73 \u00d7 55 cm<\/strong>, l\u2019une de ses premi\u00e8res \u0153uvres importantes, conserve encore certaines traces de la peinture romantique : mati\u00e8re plus \u00e9paisse, tons sombres, emp\u00e2tements. Pourtant, l\u2019ensemble r\u00e9v\u00e8le d\u00e9j\u00e0 une recherche d\u2019harmonie et d\u2019unit\u00e9 dans la composition. Contrairement aux s\u00e9jours ponctuels qu\u2019il effectue en Bretagne ou plus tard \u00e0 Fontainebleau, les paysages champenois offrent \u00e0 Bocquet une relation durable avec le motif.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2434\" data-end=\"2449\">Il y retrouve :<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2576\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1059gpp\" data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2490\">\n<p data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2490\">les plaines ouvertes de la Champagne,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"irwgeo\" data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"2512\">\n<p data-start=\"2493\" data-end=\"2512\">les chemins ruraux,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"n57dn4\" data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2541\">\n<p data-start=\"2515\" data-end=\"2541\">les vergers et les meules,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"kqodi\" data-start=\"2542\" data-end=\"2576\">\n<p data-start=\"2544\" data-end=\"2576\">les arbres isol\u00e9s dans l\u2019espace.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2790\">Ces paysages, modestes en apparence, correspondent parfaitement \u00e0 sa sensibilit\u00e9. On pressent en lui un violent besoin de solitude. Il a apport\u00e9 tout son mat\u00e9riel de peinture et une toile de format d\u00e9j\u00e0 imposant de 73 x 55 cm. Alors pour la premi\u00e8re fois, libre et seul, il se laisse aller \u00e0 son inspiration. Il a choisi un chemin encaiss\u00e9 qui serpente et s'\u00e9loigne, laissant au centre de la toile un bosquet de verdure sombre. Sur la droite, un talus et un arbre dont le tronc et les branches gr\u00eales et tordues traversent un ciel plat, blanc ros\u00e2tre. Plus loin, une meule r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit une lumi\u00e8re d\u00e9j\u00e0 brillante. Tout cela, sombre et vert, respire encore la peinture romantique, l'emp\u00e2tement, les vieux jus. L'ensemble ne manque ni d'unit\u00e9, ni d'harmonie. Il rappellera toujours \u00e0 Paul ses premi\u00e8res \u00e9motions de peintre et une v\u00e9ritable lib\u00e9ration de l'emprise de W\u00e9ry.
